A survey by the Economist that
involved human resource professionals from 133 cities around the globe in
September 2016 claims that Singapore is the most expensive city in the world.
“Singapore retains its title as the world’s most expensive
city for the fourth consecutive year, according to the latest cost-of-living survey from the Economist Intelligence Unit. The survey, which compares
the prices of 160 goods and services in 133 cities around the world and is
primarily used by human resources managers to calculate compensation packages
for overseas postings, found that Singapore was 20% more expensive than New
York and 5% pricier than Hong Kong, which lies in second place,” The Economist
said in its report.
Accommodation charges take the
largest pie in monthly cost of living expenses and Singapore is no different.
The housing cost outpaces all other expenses as per the data mentioned on

What fueled
cost of living in Singapore
Identified as an Asian Tiger economy
because of its rapid industrialization and exceptionally high growth rate,
Singapore attracts Corporates and individuals from all over the world. It has
emerged as one of the top medical and education tourism hub in the world. All
these factors have raised the influx of expats and travelers who come for
various reasons to Singapore. For those who visit Singapore for a few months
due to business or education purpose, a reasonable and homely place defines a
perfect accommodation.
Daily Vs.
Monthly Rentals: Vetting the Better Option
Let us first look at the housing
needs which vary as per the purpose of visiting Singapore. If the travel
demands a stay up to a week at the most, then one can afford a hotel or a guest
house. This mostly happens when people visit Singapore for vacation.
Usually a nice room hotel
accommodation in Singapore has an approximate daily rate of S$200.
Think of these figures in terms of a
few weeks. It works out to S$6,000 for a stay for a single room hotel
accommodation; a costly proposition for an individual. Hence, when it comes to
staying with your family or a group, a hotel accommodation is not commercially
viable as the charges will increase depending upon the number of members.
